How to Write Standout Limericks

– Start with a funny idea or situation.

– Think of a person or animal to be the subject of the limerick.

– Choose a rhyme scheme (AABBA) to structure your limerick.

– Write the first line, which introduces your subject and sets the tone for the rest of the poem.

– Write the second line, which rhymes with the first line and adds to the humor of the poem.

– Write the third and fourth lines, which follow the same rhyme pattern and continue to build on the humor of the poem.

– End with a punchline in the fifth line that surprises and delights the listener.

– Read your limerick out loud to check that it flows smoothly and is easy to understand.
